There are very few things that I miss about Phoenix, especially right now when I see that the temperature there is a steady 115 degrees. But about every 2 weeks I crave a bean burrito.
I remember the beginning of my love affair with bean and cheese burritos, it all started circa 1992 when these little Mexican restaurants, Filiberto’s, began popping up all over Arizona. My older brother would come home from going out, pick me up and we would hit Filiberto’s at about 1 o’clock in the morning and thus my love for beans began.
Those bean burritos fueled me and all my friends through our high school years, through college, after college and they made Sammy the 9 pound baby he was, I love bean burritos. This is no Taco Time or Taco Bell burrito this is a 2 pound burrito made with a tortilla that is 15 inches in diameter, they are huge. So, needless to say I have been missing those burritos ever since I have moved here. Bean burritos must not be a common thing here because everytime I have ordered one there seems to be some confusion that I could only want beans and cheese, everybody always wants to throw in some meat or rice or something.
The other day when Sammy and I were running some errands I got the craving for beans and decided to take a chance at the burrito mobile
located across the street from McClendon’s and it brought me back home. The beans were moist, flavorful and most importantly refried. The tortilla was warm, soft and huge. The only thing that could have made it better was some hot sauce but I forgot to ask, I just thought it would be in the bag.
The mobile was busy while I waited for my burrito and I happened to notice that everyone was ordering the meat tacos so they must be good. Even in AZ I would not eat meat from a burrito mobile so you are on your own for that one.
So, if you ever get a craving for beans head on over to Taquerio Juanitos, it is located east of Rainier Ave, behind the donut shop or across the street from the northend of McClendon’s.

Go ahead! Eat the meat from the Taco trucks – as long as it’s cooked fully right before you eat it.
You’re missing out on some tasty marinated flank steak!
